Hornetsecurity VM Backup takes full backups of virtual machines from a server external to the one running them. It was born as Altaro, has belonged to Hornetsecurity since 2021 and has been “by Proofpoint” since December 2025. The backup coordinates with the application through VSS — the Windows mechanism that leaves data at a consistent point before copying — whenever the application allows it: databases and ERP end up in a recoverable state, not in a snapshot taken any old way.

GFS retention
Daily, weekly and monthly backups kept at the same time: real history to go back to yesterday or three months ago, not just last night's copy.
Granular or full restore
From a single file to the entire virtual machine — also as a clone, to test without touching production.
Boot from Backup
The virtual machine boots directly from the backup, without waiting for it to be restored: less downtime after an incident.
Periodic verification
We mount the backup and check that it boots. A backup that has never been tested is a hope, not a backup.
Cross-platform restore
A VM that originated on VMware can be recovered onto Hyper-V, and the other way round, when disaster demands it — depending on edition and compatibility.
Continuous backup (CDP)
Continuous backup for the machines that justify it, with frequencies of up to one backup every 5 minutes depending on edition.
Off-site copy to another data centre
A daily copy travels to a second data centre: a disaster at the main location doesn't take the backup with it.
An appliance on your premises
A backup server prepared and managed by us: you restore quickly on-site and every day a copy is shipped off-site to our data centre.
