Yesterday's file, without restoring the machine.

File backup software with versioning, simple and very stable. When what's been lost is a file — a deleted file, an overwritten version, an earlier SQL dump — there's no need to restore an entire machine.

Backup for Workgroups: simple on purpose.

Backup for Workgroups is client-server software: a client installed on each machine sends the selected files and folders to an external backup server, which keeps previous versions of every file. In our backup architecture it is the second layer: once applications have generated their own copies — SQL Server dumps, logs, web files, configurations — this system copies them off the machine and versions them.

It is the tool for the specific incident: the deleted file, the good version overwritten, the SQL dump from a few days ago that needs recovering. You restore the exact file, in the exact version, without touching the machine it lived on.

Its virtue is having a well-defined role: we don't use it to back up entire virtual machines or live databases — that is the job of its sister layer, Hornetsecurity VM Backup →. It does one specific thing very well, and that simplicity means low operational risk.

We install it, define what is copied and with what retention, and we supervise it — the same system we use in our own infrastructure, as a piece of our managed backups →. The full architecture is told on the blog: four backup layers →

1 · APPLICATION recovers a record 2 · FILES recovers a file 3 · REPLICA recovers the service 4 · FULL VM recovers the history DAILY COPY 2nd DATA CENTRE another location
Each layer covers a different risk; every day, a copy leaves for a second data centre — and restores are tested by mounting the copy, not assumed.

What it does — and what it doesn't.

Backing up files already generated

SQL Server dumps, logs, web files, exports and configurations: what applications leave on disk, copied to an external backup server.

Versioning

Not just the latest copy: previous versions of every file, to go back to the state before a deletion or an overwrite.

Centralised client-server

One backup server stores everything in a central location; each client sends only the selected files and folders.

Installed, configured and supervised

We define what is copied and with what retention, and we watch that the backups actually run — the same system we use internally.
